EMTs and Paramedics are NOT just ambulance drivers...
...and an ambulance is NOT just a quick ride to the hospital

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
is a highly trained medical provider. An EMT can treat the injuries and/or illnesses of an adult or pediatric patient, while functioning within the parameters defined by a Medical Director and the PA Department of Health.
These skills may include, but are not limited to:
- emergency medications
- airway and breathing management
- CPR and heart defibrillation
- childbirth
- bone fracture immobilization
- spinal immobilization
- care for bleeding, wounds, and shock
- Properly trained EMTs can also assist with advanced skills, such as preparing intravenous solutionsusing the cardiac monitor, and other invasive tools.

A Paramedic
is a highly trained medical provider. In addition to the skills of an EMT, a Paramedic can administer more advanced medications and treatments to seriously ill patients. Paramedics also function under the direction of a Medical Physician. Each year, Paramedics are required to maintain continuing education to continue their practices.
- Did you ever wonder why an ambulance is on the scene of an emergency and not going to the hospital? It is because the highly trained crew often remains on scene to initiate stabilizing therapy, such as an I.V. with medication. An interesting way of explanation is that some illnesses may be beyond correction at the hospital if left untreated by EMS.
